Uniforms. Love 'em or Hate 'em.
I recently had a conversation with my girlfriend about clothes, well, work clothes to be precise.
You see, I have work clothes - clothes that I only wear at work. I also have home clothes - clothes that I wear anywhere else but work, and I hate to get the two confused. It was the same for school (in Denmark). Some clothes I'd wear to school, some I wouldn't.
Why?
I like to seperate the two. I don't want to be shopping on a Saturday wearing something I wore in the office on a Tuesday. I also don't see the point of looking particularly 'good' at school. I don't care. Work, I understand more - I think I look perfectly decent for work, and if was to have an important meeting, I'd wearing something a little more smart.
Anyhow, she didn't seem to understand me, and she does wear all her clothes, whenever she wants. It was the same at school here; people wore nice stuff to classes. I just never understood why.
The reason, it must be, is because all my schools in the UK have had uniforms, so this seperation of school/work and home/being off, is just ingrained in me. I just like the seperation; when I'm 'off', I'm 'off'.
Personally, I am a fan of uniforms at school. Takes all class and money issues out of it. God only knows I've read enough articles about children being bullied because they weren't wearing the 'right' brand. Jesus Christ that's so depressing it makes me want to die.
Quite what the arguements against uniforms are, I don't know. That they make everyone the same? But we're not the same man, we're all individuals and with uniforms we'll be known for who we are, not who we wear.
I'll tell you what, my kids are wearing uniforms regardless of where they go to school. That'll teach 'em.
